A keynote your people will actually feel. Running on Empty speaks to the burnout, invisible load and quiet depletion that exists in every team, creating the kind of conversation your organisation needs to have.
Blending lived experience, senior leadership and over two decades in mental health advocacy, Lou Wardlaw offers a deeply human keynote on burnout, invisible load and what happens when “just keep going” becomes the default setting.
Many of the people who are most relied upon are also the ones most at risk of quietly running on empty.
The leaders.
The carers.
The helpers.
The high performers.
The people who keep going often at significant personal cost.
This keynote creates a powerful moment of reflection and perspective for audiences navigating burnout, invisible load, leadership pressure, care responsibilities and the expectation to keep functioning, no matter what.

Lou has delivered keynote talks at mental health advocacy events for over 20 years, and brings extensive experience facilitating leadership development programs across the corporate sector. She brings a rare combination of:
As a carer, mental health advocate and someone who has navigated the realities of grief, mental illness and invisible load personally, Lou speaks with honesty and depth.
With more than 20 years in senior leadership, customer strategy and people leadership roles, Lou understands the pressures, expectations and emotional realities people bring to work.
Lou has a natural ability to hold a room, creating talks that are warm, grounded, moving and highly relatable.
There are periods in life where we simply keep going.
We show up.
We perform.
We care for others.
We hold everything together.
And from the outside, we can look like we’re coping.
But underneath?
Many of us are carrying far more than anyone realises.
Running on Empty is a powerful keynote about the hidden cost of constantly holding it together and what happens when we ignore the warning signs for too long.
This is not a talk about doing less or finding perfect balance.
Drawing on lived experience, leadership insight and a deeply human lens, Lou shares a keynote that explores burnout, invisible load, self-neglect and the quiet ways people disappear from their own lives while still appearing “fine” on the surface.
It is a conversation about:
Why this message matters now:
Many workplaces are full of capable, committed people who are quietly running on empty. They’re still delivering, still showing up, still holding everything together at work and at home. From the outside they seem fine; inside they’re exhausted.
Traditional “resilience” talks often focus on fixing the individual. Lou brings a different lens: how strength can turn into survival mode, why functioning isn’t the same as being okay, and what it takes to recognise depletion earlier, in ourselves, in our teams and in our culture.
This keynote is ideal for organisations and events that want a more honest, compassionate conversation about how people are really doing, including:
